Surgical Services for Pets

We prioritize your pet's comfort and care from surgery to recovery.

Glenview Animal Hospital offers surgical procedures ranging from routine to advanced procedures. Because we want to ensure our patients receive the best possible outcome, we occasionally refer them to specialists (board-certified veterinary surgeons) to perform complex operations when advanced equipment or training is beneficial.

How safe is surgery for my pet?

Our team is dedicated to ensuring the best possible care for your pet. As such, we always require a physical exam and pre-anesthetic blood testing before any recommended surgical procedure. This allows us to ensure your pet's organs are functioning correctly and can properly metabolize anesthetic. Any abnormalities noted during the physical exam or bloodwork also enable us to make individualized changes to our surgical protocol and medications to ensure your pet’s surgery goes as smoothly as possible.

During the procedure, we use monitoring technology to check your pet’s vital signs. A veterinary technician will track your pet’s temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing. We can determine how well your pet is handling the surgery by monitoring these vital signs. To learn more about our surgical protocols, please call us at 250-478-4075.

What happens after surgery?

Once the surgery is completed, we monitor your pet until the anesthesia wears off. In some cases, your pet may need additional medical care before being discharged. When we consider it safe for your pet to return home, we prescribe pain medication and instructions on how to care for your pet. Here are some tips to help your pet during recovery:

  1. Don’t allow them to lick or chew their surgical wounds. The incision should be kept clean to prevent infections.
  2. Administer their medication on time. It’s hard to tell if they are in pain, so play it safe and administer the medicine as prescribed.
  3. Encourage your pet to eat. This helps your pet regain strength and can make certain medications work better.
  4. Make their bedding more comfortable so they can rest.
